Prof Dr Jothi Malar Panandam is currently an academic member at the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). She specializes in Genetics and Animal Breeding. She obtained her bachelor degree, B.Sc. (Hons) Genetics, in 1981, and her master degree (1985) and her doctorate (1991) in Animal Breeding from University of Malaya. She started her academic career as a lecturer in 1991 at the Institute of Advanced Studies, University of Malaya, and in 1993 moved to UPM. Her research interest is in small ruminant breeding, population genetics, and the application of molecular marker technologies in livestock improvement. To date, she has over 200 publications, which includes journal, proceedings and online articles, chapters in books, articles in research reports and manuals. She has also edited two books and 12 proceedings. She serves as reviewer for a number of international and local journals. She has supervised 20 PhD and 10 Master students who have graduated. She has been a member of the Genetic Modification Advisory Committee under the Department of Biosafety, Malaysia since 2010. She is also a member of Life Science Expert Working Group under the National Education and Science Council, Malaysia. At UPM, she is a member of the Panel of Assessors for the University Studies Program, and a member of the Advisory Committee for Agribiogene Bank. She has in the past served in a number of advisory/working committees on animal genetic resources in Malaysia (Technical Sub-committee for Animal Genetic Resources, Malaysia, Advisory Committee for the State of the World Animal Genetic Resources (SOW-AnGR), Malaysia, Working Committee for the Development of National Policy on Domestic Animal Biodiversity), on the evaluation panels for R&D projects (Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Malaysia, and UPM) and in editorial committees (Buletin PGM, Malaysian Journal of Animal Production, Diyala Agricultural Sciences Journal).
