Dr Norwati Muhammad is currently the Head of Biotechnology Programme and Center for Bio- entrepreneur at the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM).  She was previously the Head of Genetic Laboratory (1998-2008) and later appointed as the Director of Forestry Biotechnology Division (2009-2014). She started her career as a Research Officer in 1990 after completing her degree, B Sc. (Hons.) in Biology (majoring in Plants Sciences) in 1989.  She then obtained her M. Sc. (Genetics) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1995.  She pursued her studies in Forest Genetics at the University of Reading United Kingdom and was awarded a PhD degree in 2000.  Her research interest includes population genetics, molecular breeding, genomics and plant biotechnology for the management, conservation and sustainable utilization of forest genetic resources. To date, she has published more than 50 articles in journals and more than 150 other technical publications/working papers.  As Head of the Bio-entrepreneur Center at FRIM she is responsible for linking the science into business by promoting technologies developed by the Biotechnology Research Team at this Institute to the relevant industries.
