Persatuan Genetik Malaysia :: Profile

He is a geneticist who obtained his PhD in Human Genetics from Universiti Putra Malaysia. He teaches in the Scientific Foundations of Medicine course and also serves as the Director of Foundations of Medical Research at Perdana University Graduate School of Medicine (PUGSOM). His main research interest involves the delineation of the progression, invasion and recurrence of cancers at the genomic and epigenomic planes. He is currently working on profiling the miRNA-transcriptomic interaction in bladder cancer patients of predominantly Asian origins. It is hope that by deciphering such interactome, better understanding of the disease will be gained as well as helping to gear towards the development of biomarkers that identify high-risk cancers and predict the aggressiveness of tumors at diagnosis. In addition, he is also working on elucidating the role of microRNAs in Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV)-mediated oncolysis in bladder cancer. Findings from the research will be used to improve the oncolytic activities of NDV in cancer cells, which will serve as an additional therapeutic modality.

Dr. Chan strongly believes in maximizing the utility of computing power to accelerate scientific discovery. Hence, his works incorporates computational approaches as a component in his research methodology. He hopes that his current collaboration with other researchers within Malaysia will promote the progress of cancer research in this country. Besides research, he is actively takes part in activities that promote science to secondary school students. He has been involves with the organizing of the National Science Challenge competition, Academy of Sciences Malaysia from 2012 to 2014
